Preventing Summertime Dehydration

As you are planning your summer activities—especially those that will occur outdoors like swimming, hiking, or playing sports—don’t forget to pack plenty of water. Hydration is important all year long, but it is especially easy to become dehydrated during the summer months because temperatures are warmer and you tend to spend more time outdoors. Dr. Randall LaFrom, a Cupertino, CA, general dentist, wants you to understand exactly how important hydration is.

Why Do You Need to Stay Hydrated?

Water composes approximately 60 percent of our body weight. But we lose water every time we perspire, use the bathroom, and even breathe. We lose about 2.5 liters of fluid every day. That is why it is so vital to replenish your water supply.

When we don’t stay properly hydrated, we risk the effects of dehydration:

  • Skin Dryness
  • Short-Term Memory Issues
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Kidney Stones
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle Pain
  • Vision Problems
  • Cavities

Dehydration also affects oral health. Drinking water cleans the mouth, neutralizing and removing bacteria and preventing gum disease and tooth decay. Saliva is a key ingredient for neutralizing acids in the mouth. If you don’t have enogh water, your body won’t produce saliva. (Similar to the effect of some medications which cause Dry Mouth – contributing to more cavities.)

Stay tuned for tips on how to stay hydrated this summer!
